Japan Tours in May: Private Trips for Green Japan & the Alps

May opens up a different kind of Japan. Once Golden Week ends, fresh-green Kyoto, the Japanese Alps, mountain snow corridors, spring festivals, and comfortable outdoor weather take center stage. Our May trips are designed around these seasonal opportunities.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Japan?

Yes, with a date range attached. Late April into early May is the strongest three weeks in the Japanese travel year: the Alpine Route's snow corridor is walkable, Ashikaga's wisteria is out, and Hokkaido still has blossom on the trees while Kyoto has gone green. April gives you blossom plus ninety minutes of queueing to see it. Late May is quieter still, but the blossom and the wisteria are finished, and the far south is edging into its rainy season. Two caveats to hold on to: the first week is Golden Week, and the last ten days belong to Kyushu's tsuyu. See things to do in Japan in May for the long list; below is what changes your booking.

Japan Weather in May: What to Pack

May is Japan's driest, mildest month, and the number that matters isn't the daytime high; it's the gap between the city and the mountain.

May Temperatures by City

CityDayNightWhat it means for you
Tokyo22–25°C14–16°CShirt plus a light jacket; evenings cooler than visitors expect
Kyoto22–25°C14–16°CLong garden days; stone courtyards hold the cold after dark
Sapporo16–18°C9–11°CEarly-May mornings genuinely cold; pack fleece you can shed

What to Wear in Japan in May

Tokyo to Osaka is T-shirt-and-a-light-jacket weather across roughly ten to fourteen wet days in the month, not the June monsoon. Bring a compact umbrella, or buy one at a convenience store on day one.

Two exceptions: Hokkaido in late April is cold in the morning, and the Alpine Route is a high-altitude snow environment whatever the calendar says.

So, prepare warm layers, a waterproof shell, and shoes with grip.

Clients have arrived at the snow corridor in sandals. They remember it.

Festival dates for 2027 are confirmed by organisers in early spring. We re-check every May itinerary against the published calendar before we book tickets.

Saturday 15 May 2027: You Have to Pick One

Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri falls on 15 May every year without exception, a Heian court procession, several hundred people in period dress, horses and ox-carriages walking to Kamigamo Shrine. Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri runs its full hon-matsuri procession only in odd-numbered years, and 2027 is one. In 2027, those two events land on the same Saturday, four hundred and sixty kilometres apart.

No clever workaround exists, and we won't sell you one. There is one decision to make: which would you rather see? And then we build everything else around it.

Which one should I pick?

Golden Week 2027: How We Craft Your May Trip Around It

Golden Week 2027 runs 29 April to 5 May: four public holidays stacked into seven days, roughly the whole country moving at once. It is manageable. It is not manageable the way a coach tour handles it, and that difference is why a private trip is worth more in this particular week. Here is how Golden Week 2027 falls on the calendar, and what we do with it.

Option 1: Shift Your Region, Not Your Dates

We put the holiday week in Shikoku, Tohoku, or the Seto Inland Sea. Golden Week pressure concentrates in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hakone; three hundred kilometres away, it's an ordinary week. You keep your dates and lose the crowd, and that's the Seto Inland Sea route we use to dodge the crowds, and the option we recommend most.

Option 2: Move Your Dates by Two or Three Days

Leaving on 28 April instead of 1 May frequently buys the identical room for less, and costs one day of leave at the front. If your dates have two days of give anywhere, tell us before we book anything.

Option 3: Private Car and Guide Instead of Peak-Hour Trains

Sometimes you can't move. Then we take the pressure out of the transport: private vehicle, private driver, no reserved seat to miss. On the three worst days, we start early, as Senso-ji at 6 am is a temple, by 10 am in Golden Week it is a subway car, so your guide collects you at 5:30  if it is ok with you.

What we won't pretend

The 3rd of May in Kyoto is busy, whoever plans it, including us. If your dates are locked inside Golden Week and Kyoto is non-negotiable, we'll say so and suggest Kamikochi instead. We'd rather lose the booking than sell you a week you'll remember badly.

Japan in May: Five Seasonal Windows and How to Time Them

Five windows that open in late April and shut at different points before July. The overlap is short, and two of them close inside the first fortnight, which is why the order of your days matters more than how many there are.

Tateyama Kurobe Snow Corridor

The Alpine Route opens in mid-April, and the walls are at their most reliable in May — deep enough to walk between, with the opening no longer in doubt. The cut is usually closed to walkers by mid-June. A footpath is cut between two faces of packed snow, reached by six modes of transport in one day.

Exactly the kind of day people get wrong alone: your driver handles the connections, your guide handles the six tickets.

★ Check office website for more details: 立山黒部アルペンルート官方站 ↗

Kamikochi's Spring Opening

Kamikochi typically opens around 27 April. Before that, the road is shut past the Kama tunnel, and private cars aren't permitted at all, so access is by certified taxi or bus.

What you get: fresh beech green, snow on the Hotaka range, meltwater at full volume. Stay one night; the day-trippers leave by four.
→ Japan Adventure Tour · From $8,106 · 15 days

Ashikaga Wisteria

Ashikaga's wisteria runs from mid-April into May, and the illuminated evening sessions are the ones worth a day: tunnels of white and purple under lights, not the daylight version on the postcards. It sits north of Tokyo, so we fold it into a culture route rather than a day trip you'll abandon in traffic.
→ Japan Culture & History Essential Tour · From $8,365 · 14 days

Fuji Shibazakura

Moss phlox is out at the base of Mt Fuji from late April, with the mountain behind it. It's a short stop from Hakone on a road you're driving anyway, which is why it belongs inside a trip, not as a reason for one. Pair it with a clear day at Lake Kawaguchi, and you have the photograph people come for.
→ Best of Japan Tour · From $5,880 · 9 days

Hokkaido's Late Cherry Blossoms

Everywhere else in Japan is finished by mid-April. Hokkaido isn't, as the bloom arrives weeks later, which is why our Hokkaido trip only departs 25 April to 10 May. Sixteen days a year. Before the 25th, the trees haven't opened; after the 10th, even Hakodate has turned to leaf. It's the last window on this page with a hard close date.

Nobody can promise petals on a date, not us, not the forecast sites. We hold your Hokkaido nights loose until about two weeks out, then swap the order against that year's bloom.

Japan Itineraries for May: 8, 10 or 12 Days?

Three routes cover almost everything people come to Japan for in May. Pick by what you want on day three, and the length follows from that.

8–10 Days: The Classic Tokyo–Kyoto Route

Tokyo, Hakone, Mt Fuji, Kyoto, Nara.

This is the first-timer's spine, best from 6 May onward, when the holiday pressure comes off both cities.

Ten days adds a night in Hakone and a ryokan you'll remember; eight means choosing between Nara and a second Kyoto day.

→ Best of Japan Tour — From $5,880 · 9 days

→ See more 8-day Japan itineraries

12 Days: Alps and Snow Walls

Tokyo, Matsumoto, the Alpine Route, Toyama, Kanazawa, Takayama, Kyoto.

You start in shirtsleeves, and two days later you're walking between walls of snow.

Order matters: the Alpine Route works southbound, and running it the other way costs a backtrack through Toyama and a wasted night. Twelve days is the comfortable minimum; ten turns the mountain section into a sprint.

→ Japan's Alpine Wonders — From $7,345 · 12 days

→ See more 12-day Japan itineraries

10 Days: Hokkaido Late Spring

Sapporo, Otaru, Lake Toya, Hakodate — inside the 25 April to 10 May window and nowhere else, because that's when the blossom is there.

Six days is the trip as we sell it; ten adds the Onuma lakes and a slower run down the Funka Bay coast.

→ Hokkaido Cherry Blossom Tour — From $3,770 · 6 days

Why Book Private Japan Tours in May with UME Travel

Private vs Coach Tour: What Changes in May

A coach tour has a fixed date, a fixed hotel list, and a fixed order of cities. In most months that's a fair trade for the price. In May it costs you the month's two best assets, because both are scheduling problems, not sightseeing problems: the snow corridor and Kamikochi sit inside windows that shift each year, and a fixed itinerary can't move with them. We hold two nights loose and reorder against the season. Golden Week is the same problem at scale — forty people can't be relocated to Shikoku for four days, and eight people in two cars can.

Your plan has a name on it. Four specialists build our May trips, and you'll know which one is yours before you decide anything.

Amber, Hokkaido & Tohoku: "I plan Hokkaido first when the cherry blossoms are moving north, then work south through Tohoku, adjusting the route to catch each region near its peak bloom."

Steven, The Alps & Tateyama: "I plan around the Tateyama Kurobe Snow Wall season and Kamikochi's spring opening, checking access dates and allowing enough time for transfers between mountain areas."

Carrie, Families & Kids: "I keep family days flexible, with shorter sightseeing blocks and time to rest, and I often recommend visiting popular theme parks after Golden Week to avoid the busiest holiday crowds."

Dan, Kyoto, Festivals & Slow Travel: "I help travelers choose based on the experience they want: Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri on May 15 for its elegant Heian-era procession, or Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri in festival years when the main celebrations fall in mid-May."

FAQs About Japan Tours in May

  • Is May a good time to visit Japan?

Yes, particularly from 6 May onward: crowds drop, the weather stays mild, and the Alps are open. Late April into early May is the window that catches the snow corridor, the wisteria, and Hokkaido's last sakura in one trip. Late May is quieter again, but the blossom and the wisteria have finished.

  • Is Japan crowded in May?

It depends on the week. 1–5 May is Golden Week, Japan's busiest travel period. From the second week, the country empties out again. More on Golden Week 2027 dates.

  • When is Golden Week in Japan 2027?

29 April to 5 May 2027, built around four public holidays, with heaviest travel at the start and end. We re-check the calendar before booking.

  • Should I avoid Japan during Golden Week?

Not necessarily. If your dates are fixed, we move that week to Shikoku, Tohoku, or the Seto Inland Sea, and drive instead of taking peak-hour trains.

  • Is a Japan trip in May cheaper than in April?

Usually, once Golden Week is over. April overlaps peak sakura, when Tokyo and Kyoto rates peak; from 6 May they come off.

  • Can you see cherry blossoms in Japan in May?

Yes, but only in the north. Honshu has finished by mid-April; Hokkaido is still in season, hence our 25 April to 10 May departures only.

  • Where can you see cherry blossoms in Japan in May?

Hokkaido: Hakodate's Goryokaku Fort, Matsumae Castle and Sapporo. At altitude, parts of Tohoku and the Alps can hold blossoms early in the month. See the Hokkaido sakura season.

  • When does the Tateyama Kurobe snow corridor open?

The Alpine Route opens in mid-April; the snow is deep and reliable through May, usually gone by mid-June. We build around the May window.

  • Is Kamikochi open in May?

Yes. It typically opens around 27 April, with fresh green below and snow on the Hotaka range. Private cars aren't permitted beyond the Kama tunnel.

  • What is the weather like in Japan in May?

Mild and mostly dry. Tokyo and Kyoto sit in the low twenties by day, mid-teens at night; Sapporo cooler, Okinawa already summer-like.

  • What should I wear in Japan in May?

Layers. A T-shirt plus a light jacket covers the cities; the Alps need fleece, a waterproof shell, and shoes with grip.

  • Does it rain a lot in Japan in May?

Less than June. Tokyo and Kyoto see roughly ten to fourteen wet days across the month. Okinawa starts earlier, Kyushu possibly in the final week. See May rainfall by region.

  • Can you still ski in Japan in May?

Almost nowhere. Most Hokkaido resorts close in early May and what's left is slush. If powder is the trip, come in January.

  • How many days do you need for a Japan trip in May?

Ten days covers Tokyo–Hakone–Kyoto–Osaka. Twelve adds the Alps and the snow corridor. Six or seven works for a single region.

  • What is included in a private Japan tour in May?

A private vehicle and driver, your own licensed guide, accommodation with breakfast, listed entrance fees, luggage forwarding, and a 24-hour number in Japan.

  • Do I need to book Japan tours in May far in advance?

Three months or more for Golden Week, six to ten weeks otherwise. Hokkaido's sakura window goes first — sixteen days a year.
